Yard Signs & Window Stickers - Effective Home Security Measures

28 July, 2010

Ever hear about not advertising which security company is protecting your home because that lets burglars know what they have to do to disarm the security system? Don't buy that old chestnut for a minute.

Homes that are protected by a professionally installed and monitored home security burglar alarm system are up to three times less likely to be burglarized than homes that have no security system. This is because burglars know that a professionally protected home presents them with far more risk than the reward could possibly be worth.

My monitored ADT home security system came with a window decal and a yard sign, and we put them to work just as quickly as we could. We were anxious to let burglars know that our house was the wrong house for them. When obstacles are placed in their way, they'll move on to an easier target.

Have your home professionally protected, and advertise that it is! Let burglars know that your house is the wrong house.

Summertime Is The Height Of The Burglary Season

26 July, 2010

Statistics show that summertime is high time for burglars. The weather is good, families are out doing more things late at night, or taking long weekends, or even gone on vacation for a week or more. Hotter temperatures are even a cause of more burglaries. Many people leave windows cracked for fresh air, and to any seasoned burglar this is as good as a written invitation.

Summer means being extra careful when it comes to home security. Kids and their friends are constantly in and out of the house, or working a summer job that keeps them out late. Burglars know all of these things and they'll quickly target any house they think will be an easy score.

ADT home security systems are great way to protect your home every day of the year, including the tougher summer months when burglars are out en masse. Protect you and your family today by have a home security system professionally installed.

Windows - A Risk To Your Home Security

21 July, 2010

I recently installed an in-window air conditioning unit in my house. When I was done with the task I realized I had a potential security gap in my home security that needed to be addressed.

Since the air conditioner didn't fill the entire window space, I had to add a spacer to fill the gap. I had roughly a 2' by 2' space to fill. Originally, I thought I'd just cut out a cardboard panel the right size to fill in the space. I quickly realized that wouldn't be very secure. I contemplated this for a while to determine how I was going to cut the heat of summer and still ensure my house is protected.

Fortunately, the window in question is a ground-level window with a decent thatch of roses planted in front of it. I decided I'd fashion something out of wood that I could attach to the window sill with L—brackets and screws. It took a little bit of time, and I did have to go to the hardware store for the right brackets, but in the end I feel like I have something in place that will make that window as secure as possible. I even put a dowel in the track so it can't be opened any further.

A monitored ADT home security system is only as good as the physical security of the house. Check each window to make certain they're locked and have something strong in the track to prevent it from being opened from the outside.

A Medical Pendant Can Be A Life Saver

23 June, 2010

Lately, I've been speaking with my parents about medical pendants as part of their home security system. They finally agreed that the value to them far outweighed any other consideration.

Pride can be a terrible thing, and an even harder thing to overcome. A percentage of aging, but otherwise mobile seniors can feel like they're giving up their last vestiges of freedom in independence at even the suggestion of a medical pendant, which is why it becomes increasingly easy to help our senior family members make a home security decision based on practicality and common sense rather than emotions.

I talked with my parents, now in the late 70s, about all the conveniences they have in their lives. Automatic garage doors, remote start for the vehicles, one-button remote control for their home theater setup, wireless internet, cordless phones, and the like.

The conversation about medical pendants became one of practicality and convenience. What if something happened to one of them when the other wasn't home? The practicality of an easy-to-wear security button quickly became evident and they made the call to add them as part of their home security system.

They now feel like their monitored ADT home security system is truly a complete package, and best of all they don't feel like their choice was anything other than a common sense approach to their home security. Help the seniors in your life make the same choice, and gain the peace of mind you – and they – deserve.

Accidental Broken Window Puts Emphasis On Home Security

21 June, 2010

Totally on accident this weekend I broke one of the smaller windows in my house. Since it was a small window my first thought was to just patch it with tape and cardboard. Glad I chose otherwise.

So, I was washing the inside of a small window and pressed a little too hard and broke it. It's kind of an out-of-the-way window, so my first thought was that it would be no big deal if I just patched the window. Almost immediately I knew I was thinking wrongly about the whole thing.

House burglars look for vulnerabilities, and a patched window with cardboard and duct tape is a dead giveaway that entry into the house will be relatively easy. Immediately, I went to a local home improvement store. The window was standard size and it was easily replaced for just a few dollars.

Home security is all about the little details. Combined, the equal a strong security plan. Paired with a monitored ADT security alarm system, your home can be secure against fires, smoke damage, floods, and of course home burglaries.
