Burglar Steals Sandwiches, Leaves Money Behind

27 May, 2010

Mark Lowry

Police say a burglar broke into a Des Moines, Iowa Subway store, dined on a fair amount of cold cuts, probably made a few for the road, and left... as in left the cash behind.

The thief got inside the shop through a drive-up window late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, made some sandwiches, took a significant amount of cold cut meats, bread, and cookies, but left the cash behind. Having the run of a really great sandwich store can be quite a distraction.

Now, burglars generally aren't going to leave the high-ticket items behind in favor of a few sandwiches. Don't stock your fridge with goodies while leaving your cash on the kitchen counter. There's a very good chance both will be gone when you get home.

Instead, have a monitored ADT home security system professionally installed in your home and keep your cash – and your sandwich fixings – safe from burglars!

Home Security Is Home Improvement

19 May, 2010

There are those who are in to home security, and those who are in to home improvement. However, these two things aren't mutually exclusive and one can facilitate the other.

Live in a house long enough and chances are you're going to choose to replaces some doors and windows. These things can add a stylish new look, lend to increased energy efficiencies, and, whether you've thought about it or not, bolster your home security.

Security windows include such things as unbreakable glass, shatter proof glass, complex locking mechanisms, steel rods in the window track, and reflective coatings that betray the contents inside the house.

Choosing doors with increased security for your home is fairly straight forward. Most doors have 2 or 3 hinges. You can increase the security of your door by choosing a 4-hinge door. Additionally, a door with additional security features can include steel reinforcement inside the wood, commercial-grade deadbolt locks, and automatic closing/locking mechanisms. Stay away from doors that have an excessive amount of windows, or those that feel cheaply made. There's a reason they feel that way.

A very effective way to protect your doors and windows – both old and new – is with ADT home security equipment. Each basic system comes standard with door and window sensors, designed to let you know instantly when a door and window has been breached.

Everyone Deserves To Have A Safe Vacation

17 May, 2010

Everyone deserves to go on a nice vacation in the summer. Unfortunately, that's the height of burglary season because for some reason burglars never really do go on vacation.

Summertime means camping, BBQs, kids home from school, warm nights under the stars, and overtime hours for burglars. So many homes are left vacant during the summer as families travel out of town to enjoy vacation together. The last thing you want to discover when you come back is that someone else is enjoying your flat screen TV and Blu-Ray player.

Before you go on vacation this summer make certain you've stopped your mail and newspaper delivery, and if at all possible have hired a house sitter. In the event this isn't possible, you need to take some further security precautions before you leave.

Set some lamps, radios, and television on timers around your house. What you're going for is the impression that people are home. Set them to turn on and off at different times; at times that will simulate typical usage when you're actually at home.

Make certain your monitored ADT home security system is completely ready, and ensure that it's armed before you pull out of the driveway. Also, it's never a bad idea to let your home security monitoring company know you're going to be out of town. The more people looking after your house while you're away, the more likely you'll be coming home to a house that's just the way you left it!

Home Security Principles Apply to Apartment Dwellers, Too

14 May, 2010

From a home security standpoint, living in an apartment is essentially the same as living in a house.

Really, the same rules apply. If you live in an apartment and are serious about home security, here are some things you can do to make where you live safer:

Lock all of your doors and windows every time you enter or exit your apartment. Getting in the habit of locking your door is a habit you'll want for a lifetime.

Consider changing all the locks when you move in. Ask the property manager if this is a service they offer. If not, and this is something you feel strongly about, make the changes yourself and provide the property manager with copies of the new keys.

Never leave messages pinned or taped to your door. This is a dead giveaway that you are not at home, and with as much traffic as apartment complexes deal with, one of those people could be looking for just this opportunity to relieve you of some of your hard earned property.

Having a professionally installed and monitored home security system like ADT alarm can be incredibly beneficial, although apartment dwellers typically cannot qualify for such a system. Check with a dealer to see if you can get a professional home security system for your apartment.

You Can't Drive Your House To The Fire Station

14 May, 2010

The difference between fact and fiction is that the fiction has to be believable or no one will, you know, believe it. This one's got fact written all over it.

A man in Carlton, Oregon decided he'd better let professionals take a look at his car problem, which just happened to be smoke billowing out of the hood of his truck. Mechanic? Hardly! The engine of his truck was on fire so he drove just a few blocks to the local fire station. Fire Marshal Eric McMullen said a firefighter who'd been outside washing an ambulance rushed inside to get help. Firefighters opened the hood and found flames licking around the engine. They quickly grabbed a hose and put out the fire.

Okay, you certainly can't drive your house to the fire station – and I don't want to hear any motor home jokes. The fact is your local emergency response units can be on their way to your house in the event of a fire, often faster than dialing 911, when you have a home security system with ADT monitoring.
